Dans Personal Jesus, on suit la dernière nuit d’errance d’une star du rock adulée et subversive, mystérieusement disparue en 1995. Par des rencontres réelles – une fan qui découvrira le vrai visage de son idole – ou imaginaires – le chien Snoopy au fond d’un lac, lieu où sera moralement jugé le musicien –, l’autrice vise à retirer le fard qui compose l’image publique d’une personnalité pour révéler sa nature profonde.

Richey James Edwards qui appartenait au groupe britannique Maniac Street Preachers, disparut la nuit du 1er février 1995, au bord de la rivière Severn qui sépare l’Angleterre du pays de Galles. Son corps ne fut jamais retrouvé. C’est sa dernière nuit qu’imagine l’auteure. Nuit d’errance, de débauche, de rencontres réelles ou fantasmées. Dans une chambre d’hôtel il avoue à une groupie que sa guitare n’est pas branchée lors des concerts. Il ne se sait pas en jouer. Il doit partir le lendemain en tournée aux USA. La jeune fille a perdu sa médaille de baptême. Ils décident alors de la retrouver. Attiré par la voix du Chien Snoopy, Richey terminera cette nuit au fond d’un lac dans un cabaret-tribunal…Sabryna Pierre peint le monde contemporain à travers un fait divers où elle décortique le mythe pour voir l’humain.

In Personal Jesus, we follow the last night of wandering of a beloved and subversive rock star who mysteriously disappeared in 1995. Through real encounters—a fan who discovers her idol's true face—and imaginary ones—Snoopy the dog at the bottom of a lake, where the musician is morally judged—the author aims to strip away the veneer that makes up a public figure's image to reveal their true nature.

Richey James Edwards, who belonged to the British band Maniac Street Preachers, disappeared on the night of February 1, 1995, on the banks of the River Severn, which separates England from Wales. His body was never found. The author imagines his last night. A night of wandering, debauchery, and real or imagined encounters. In a hotel room, he confesses to a groupie that his guitar is not plugged in during concerts. He doesn't know how to play it. He has to leave the next day on tour in the US. The young girl has lost her baptismal medal. They decide to find it. Attracted by the voice of Snoopy the Dog, Richey ends the night at the bottom of a lake in a cabaret-courtroom... Sabryna Pierre paints the contemporary world through a news item in which she dissects the myth to see the human being.
