Compositeur italien de la fin du dix-neuvième siècle, Ugo Bottacchiari signe, à vingt ans à peine, cet opéra de chambre en un acte. Le livret de Cosimo Contri raconte l’histoire de Wolfango, un étudiant sans âge qui erre dans une chambre minuscule. Il ressasse son amour pour la belle Marguerite, lorsque le spectre d’une femme vient interrompre ses souvenirs. Le vrai songe peut alors commencer : un voyage intérieur qui mène ce couple étrange jusqu’au bout de leur destinée. Il en ressort un chef-d’œuvre minimaliste d’une intimité poignante. Cette œuvre rassemble une grande économie de moyens : un couple de deux personnages principaux et un chœur de quatre femmes dans une histoire à huis clos. La mise en scène épurée, ainsi que la réduction inédite pour douze musiciens frappe par le contraste entre son minimalisme et la puissance de ses affects.
Late-nineteenth-century Italian composer Ugo Bottacchiari was barely twenty when he wrote this one-act chamber opera. Cosimo Contri's libretto tells the story of Wolfango, an ageless student who wanders around a tiny room. He broods over his fallen love for the beautiful Marguerite, when the specter of a woman interrupts his memories. Then the real dream begins: an inner journey that takes this strange couple to the end of their destiny. The result is a minimalist masterpiece of poignant intimacy. This is a work of great economy of means: a couple of two main characters and a chorus of four women in a story told behind closed doors. Reinforced by an uncluttered staging and an original reduction for twelve musicians, the show is striking in the contrast between its minimalism and the power of its affects.
Luc Birraux et le chef d’orchestre Antoine Rebstein, cofondateurs de la Cie Operatic, imaginent pour cette pièce un accompagnement mobile, adaptable à différents lieux. Ils commandent au Lausannois Kevin Juillerat une réduction d’orchestre, interprétée par douze instrumentistes de la Camerata Ataremac. Quant au livret existant, assez succinct, il est étoffé par la librettiste Sabryna Pierre et livre la raison de cet amour impossible.

Luc Birraux and conductor Antoine Rebstein, co-founders of Cie Operatic, imagined a mobile accompaniment for this piece, adaptable to different locations. They commissioned Lausanne-based Kevin Juillerat to write an orchestral reduction, to be performed by twelve instrumentalists from Camerata Ataremac. As for the existing, rather succinct libretto, it was fleshed out by librettist Sabryna Pierre and gives the reason for this impossible love.
